This trend pas popularized by women a few years ago with the comeback of skinny legged jeans replacing the long popular boot-cut jeans. There is a bit of a difference between mens skinny jeans and skinny jeans for women. While the women’s styles are skin tight from waist to ankle and made of elasticized denim, men’s skinny jeans tend to be a bit looser. They are constructed out of standard, non elastic denim and are baggier around the waist. Men’s versions are also not as tight around the ankles. This is probably to accommodate men’s larger foot sized. I can just imagine how difficult it would be to get a mans foot out of the narrow leg opening in women’s skinny jeans.

Skinny jeans had their first rise to popularity in the early 1980′s. Check out any 1980′s teen movie and you will notice all the valley girls sporting skinny jeans. Guess was THE hot manufacturer back then and their jeans typically were made of standard denim with the addition of short zippers on the ankles to allow your feet to slip in and out of the jeans. Of course back in the 80′s skinny jeans were primarily manufactured for women. There was a bit of a crossover with the punk rock set where basically anything went as far as fashion was concerned. If you take some time to browse some older photos you can see many male punk rockers sporting skinny jeans that must have been purchased in the women’s department.

When the skinny jeans for men trend first appeared men had to buy their jeans in the women’s department. I’m sure many men had to request their wives and girlfriends do their shopping for them so as not to be seen buying clothes in the women’s department. I can only imaging the scenes that may have ensued with men trying to try on women’s jeans. Within the past year several manufacturers have added skinny jeans for men to their product lineup. While not as common as normal jeans many styles of men’s skinny jeans are available in stores ranging from designer boutiques to mass market retailers.
